Baking bread

20140624-095044.jpg In order to achieve our bronze level Farming and Countryside Award we need to learn about wheat. This week we have looked at wheat and learned about it’s role in making bread. We have read the story of The Little Red Hen and made our own bread. We all had a small taste before sports day practice to give us some more energy!

Carrot cake

Some of us helped to make the carrot cakes at the farm. There wasn’t enough room for them all in the cooker so Derek too some of them to the farm house to cook in his aga.

20140624-093726.jpg Here they are, freshly cooked! As we were so full from all the vegetable soup we took them back to school to eat when we got off the bus.

Ready, steady, cook!

At the farm we decided to make some vegetable soup and carrot cakes, using our healthy ingredients. We learned lots of new skills and made sure we kept safe when using knives and hot water.

20140624-092941.jpg we kept safe at the cooker by listening very careful to the adults and only entering the kitchen area with an adult (or two!).

Today we continued to work towards the Bronze level of our Farming and Countryside award. We looked at lots of different seeds and talked about differences and similarities. We can now identify a sunflower and a broad bean seed. We all went on a leaf hunt. We discovered that there are lots of different trees in our school environment and used a leaf identification chart to help us find out what they are called. We have been learning about the properties of shapes in maths this week so this new vocabulary has really helped us talk about the shapes of the leaves and seeds. We all planted our own sunflower seed and learned about what they need to grow. We looked at different fruit and vegetables and learned about how to categorise them.
We are well on our way to achieve the Bronze award by the end of the year. Which level of the award are you working towards?

Challenge Time in the mud kitchen (child initiate learning)

We are being the 3 bears from Goldilocks and the 3 Bears. We are learning about capacity, using story language and acting out a familiar story whilst we play! image

We have been learning all about measuring capacity. We have used the mud kitchen to create pies, cakes and drinks that we’re full, half full and empty! We explored overflowing and compared containers to learn that capacity measure how much available space there is. image
